1. This article was about a high school teacher who taught inner city students and they are considered "at risk". The used to be called inner city students but that term is no longer politically correct. They are known as "at risk" because they are predominantly low income, black, and feared. The school requires them to go to school with a clear, see through, backpack so they cannot conceal a weapon in there. I found this interesting because I never felt at risk of anything but an education at school. Another part of the article I found interesting was that he took martial arts and other fighting type classes at the gym to prepare him for his everyday challenges of teaching in his classroom. I thought that was interesting because martial arts is considered an extremely physical and hard activity to do, and the fact that he compared that to his everyday job teaching must mean teaching these students is extremely difficult as well.
2. This article was about a street educate African American that shy'd away from his street ways and moved on to become a successful individual. I thought this was a very good article to read because it shows that if somebody really tries, they can become successful. It told a story how he wrote a poem about a girl that didn't care for him and it got published, which in return, made him want to pursue an education rather than being a 'street thug'. It was a very inspirational article because very few people can say that they grew up with nothing but street education, but then proceeded to become a successful individual with hopes of soon becoming a college professor.
3. This article was about a persons grandmother that grew up in a large family and extremely poor with no education at all. The living conditions in Italy as a child were very harsh for her and eventually she got shipped over on a boat to North America as a bride to be of somebody she has never met and who has only ever seen one picture of her. This to me was interesting because I thought that it was only religion or culture that ever had 'mail order brides' but I've never heard of Italian culture taking part of it. I found it interesting that the writer and her grandmother had worked in the fabric store together and that's where she got to know her the most. I found that interesting because most people never have a chance to work with their grandparents due to them having already retired or something like that.
